FAQ
How much does My Phone cost?
Microsoft does not charge a fee for using My Phone. However, the data plan you have with your mobile operator may require you to pay data-transfer charges when using the service. If you’re unsure of your plan’s coverage, check your user agreement or contact your mobile operator.
How much space do I have in Microsoft My Phone?
Your My Phone account provides you with 200 MB of free storage on your web account. If you try to sync content to your My Phone account that exceeds this limit, then My Phone will stop transferring files until you manually delete some files and create more space.
The maximum size you can transfer to your account is 15 MB per file.
To see how much storage you have available, sign in to your web account on the My Phone site.
Where is my content stored online?
All content synced through Microsoft My Phone is stored in your password-protected web account on servers located in Microsoft data centers.
To access your web account, sign in to the My Phone site using the Windows Live ID that you used to create the My Phone account.
How do I know if my data was synced?
When your phone has synced its content with the server, you’ll see a message telling you it was successful.
When you click Show details, you’ll get detailed information about what was synchronized.
Sign in to your web account on the My Phone site to see the data that you synced to your account.
How does My Phone handle sync conflicts between changes on the phone and the web?
When My Phone encounters a sync conflict between changes made on the phone and on your web account, the information on the phone will always take precedence and replace the information on your web account.
How long will my data remain in my web account?
As long as you are actively syncing your phone to your web account, your information will not be deleted. However, if your account is inactive for six months (meaning that you don’t sync your phone or access your web account through a computer), then you’ll receive a warning before your information is removed.
See the My Phone Terms of Use (linked at the bottom of this page) for more information.
If I stop My Phone, will my data be deleted?
Stopping the My Phone service doesn’t delete any data from either your phone or your web account. It simply prevents your phone from synchronizing with your web account.
To restart the My Phone service, open the program on your phone. You’ll have to re-enter your Windows Live ID again before you’re able to sync.
Tip
- If your web account remains inactive (currently for more than six months), then your account and all content stored within it may be deleted as set forth in the Terms of Use.
What happens if my phone was off during the scheduled sync?
If your phone was turned off during a scheduled sync, it will wait until its next scheduled sync to try again. You can also sync your phone at any time by clicking Sync in My Phone.
What file types does My Phone sync?
My Phone will sync a wide variety of content and document types between your phone and your web account.
To be included in a sync with your web account, your photos, music, videos, and documents must be located:
- In the My Documents folder (or one of its subdirectories) on the phone.
- On the memory card (if selected).

Why are some data options disabled in the My Phone sync settings?
By default, My Phone syncs your contacts, calendar appointments, tasks, text messages, photos, music, videos, and documents with your web account. However, My Phone won’t sync contacts, calendar appointments, and tasks if you have an Exchange account on your phone to avoid multiple services syncing the same types of data.
Will My Phone sync with my Windows Live calendar?
Currently, the My Phone and Windows Live calendars are separate calendars. So anything added to your Windows Live calendar will not appear in My Phone, nor will anything added to the calendar in your phone appear in your Windows Live calendar.
Will My Phone sync data over Wi-Fi?
My Phone syncs content between your phone and your web account using the phone’s standard data connection. Depending on your phone’s capabilities and how your standard data connection is set up, My Phone will use the cellular network (e.g., GPRS), a Wi-Fi connection, or a connection to your computer using either Bluetooth or a USB cable.
How do I check for My Phone updates?
My Phone will automatically check for software updates each time you sync your phone. If it finds one, My Phone will prompt you before downloading the update.
How do I make suggestions or report issues with My Phone?
You can make suggestions and report issues on the user forum at http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/MyPhone/threads/. The My Phone product team values your input and reviews all comments on a regular basis.
Where can I read the latest news about Microsoft My Phone?
The My Phone product team maintains a blog with news and updates at http://myphoneteam.spaces.live.com/.
What is the maximum number of files I can store in my web account?
You can store up to a maximum of 10,000 files for each content type. (The eight content types are contacts, calendar appointments, tasks, photos, videos, music, text messages, and documents.) So for example, if you upload more than 10,000 photos to your web account, My Phone will stop synchronizing and you won’t be able to add any new files. In order to resume synchronizing, you’ll need to delete some of the photo files from your web account to bring the total number below 10,000.
